The Beginning

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

The Beginning. The Black Eyed Peas. Audio CD. Interscope Records. Release Date: November 30, 2010. ASIN B0042X90LG

SUMMARY

The beginning is The Black Eyed Peas sixth album. It follows the success of their previous album The E.N.D. It is a hip hop album that has incorporated songs from the past. The song "The Time (Dirty Bit)" opens with the opening lyric of I’ve Had the Time of My Life from the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. There are other older songs that are in the background of the additional songs on the CD, but I do not know the names of those songs. I recognize them though. The tracks on the album are: The Time (Dirty Bit), Light Up the Night, Love You Long Time, Xoxoxo, Someday, Whenever, Fashion Beats, Don’t Stop the Party, Do It Like This, The Best One Yet (The boy), Just Can’t Get Enough, Play It Loud.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

I am most certainly not a music critic, either I like it or I don’t. I like The Beginning. It’s a great CD that will keep you upbeat. I loved The Time. I am a child of the 80’s, so this was a nice surprise. I also think that it was great that we get to hear Fergie’s voice. In most of the CD her voice is digitized. She really has a great voice, it’s a shame we don’t get to hear it. Love You Long Time has a Reggae kind of feel to it, mixed with hip hop of course. Play it loud is the closest song to pop on the album. It is one of the milder songs. No ballads here. This CD will keep you going on a rough day. It is not the kind of music you want to relax to. If you’re looking to pick up the pace then The Beginning is for you. Teens will love this CD. The Black Eyed Peas are hugely successful. I think that teens and young adults play a large part in that success.

LISTENER’S ANNOTATION

Great hip hop CD for when you need a pick me up.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE BLACK EYED PEAS:

The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1995. The group is composed of rapper and multi-instrumentalist will.i.am, rappers apl.de.ap and Taboo, and singer-rapper Fergie. Since the release of their third album, Elephunk, in 2003, the group has sold an estimated 27 million albums worldwide, 20 million singles and 47 million copies with both sales combined.

The group scored their first worldwide hit with "Where Is the Love?" in 2003, which topped over ten charts worldwide. Another single was the European hit "Shut Up". Their next album, Monkey Business was also a worldwide hit, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning two hit singles, "My Humps" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart".
In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have ever simultaneously held the #1 and #2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, with their singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling". The album later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with "Imma Be", making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album before being followed with "Rock That Body" which managed to peak in the Top 10 of Hot 100. "I Gotta Feeling" has become the first single to sell more than 1 million downloads in the United Kingdom.

Before becoming part of the Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am and apl.de.ap were in a group called Atban Klann, signed to Eazy E's Ruthless Records. The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on the Billboard's Decade-End Chart Artist of the Decade, and 7th in the Hot 100 Artists of the Decade. The group has been nominated for "Most Popular International Artist" in the ARIA Music Awards.

In November 2010, they released their album The Beginning. The first single of the album was "The Time (Dirty Bit)". The song topped the charts in many countries. In February 2011, the group performed at the Super Bowl XLV halftime show. The album's second single was "Just Can't Get Enough" and it was released in February 2011. (Unknown, The Black Eyed Peas)

Twilight Soundtrack

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Twilight: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Various Artists. Audio CD. Chop Shop/Atlantic. Release Date: November 4, 2008. ASIN B001ED7C58

SUMMARY

This is the soundtrack for the movie Twilight. I purchased the soundtrack from iTunes and there are three bonus tracks. It offers a wide variety of music ranging from dance to rock to classical. It features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paramore (a teen favorite) and Rob Pattinson (the actor that played Edward in the movie).

Supermassive Black Hole: Muse
Decode: Paramore
Full Moon: The Black Ghosts
Leave Out All the Rest: Linkin Park
Spotlight (Twilight Mix): MuteMath
Go All the Way (Into the Twilight): Perry Farrell
Tremble for My Beloved: Collective Soul
I Caught Myself: Paramore
Eyes on Fire: Blue Foundation
Never Think: Rob Pattinson
Flightless Bird, American Mouth: Iron & Wine
Bella’s Lullaby: Cater Burwell
Let Me Sign (Bonus Track): Rob Pattinson
La Traviata (Bonus Track): Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Clair de Lune (Bonus Track): The APM Orchestra

CRITICAL EVALUATION

I had purchased the soundtrack after I saw the movie. I absolutely love the song Supermassive Black Hole by Muse. It is full of energy and is a great pick-me-up for a road trip. It leans towards new wave, but it works. The other song that I just had to own was Bella’s Lullaby. What a beautiful piece of music. I actually wound up buying the score because of it. Once I listened to the two songs that I loved from the movie I found that the rest of the soundtrack was quite good. Go All the Way (Into the Twilight) is a dance song, with a hint of techno. Never Think by Rob Pattinson is very different than most of the music on the soundtrack. Where most of the songs are fast paced, this song is a quiet acoustic song that almost seems out of place on the soundtrack. However, once you see where it is placed in the movie, it makes sense. If teens are looking of a good mix of music, the Twilight Soundtrack delivers.

LISTENER’S ANNOTATION

When you listen to the soundtrack you can visualize the movie.

Fearless

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Fearless. Swift, Taylor. Audio CD. Big Machine Records. Release Date: November 11, 2008
ASIN B001EYGOEM

SUMMARY

Fearless is Taylor Swift’s second release. She has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards for Fearless. It was the first album to sell one million copies in 2009. Song title are: Fearless, Fifteen, Love Story, Hey Stephen, White Horse, You Belong With Me, Breathe, Tell Me Why, You’re Not Sorry, The Way I Loved You, Forever & Always, The Best Day, Change.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Before I bought this CD, I had no idea that Taylor Swift was a country music singer. I thought that she was a pop singer. Although her style is most definitely country, she has enough pop influence for her to be able to cross over into the pop market. Swift did write some of the songs on the CD, and she can sing, unlike the Britney’s of recent history. However, I thought all most of the songs sounded the same. Until I got to You Belong With Me, I felt like I was listening to one long song, some parts slower than others. Then beginning with the next song, I went back to one song again, with a short break for Forever & Always. I appreciate the fact that every artist has their own style, but a little variety is also good. I am not really a fan of country music, which may be why it all sounded the same to me. Since she’s been nominated for eight Grammy’s this year, there must be something more to Fearless that I just don’t get.

READER’S ANNOTATION

Country music with a pop twist.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST

Taylor Swift is an American country pop, singer-songwriter, musician and actress.
In 2006, she released her debut single "Tim McGraw", then her self-titled debut album, which was subsequently certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. In November 2008, Swift released her second album, Fearless, and the recording earned Swift four Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year, at the 52nd Grammy Awards. Fearless and Taylor Swift finished 2008 at number-three and number-six respectively, with sales of 2.1 and 1.5 million Fearless topped the Billboard 200 for 11 non-consecutive weeks; no album has spent more time at No. 1 since 2000. Swift was named Artist of the Year by Billboard Magazine in 2009. Swift released her third album Speak Now on October 25, 2010 which sold 1,047,000 copies in its first week.

In 2008, her albums sold a combined four million copies, making her the best-selling musician of the year in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Forbes ranked Swift 2009's 69th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $18 million and 2010's 12th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $45 million. Swift was ranked the 38th Best Artist of the 2000–10 decade by Billboard. In January 2010 Nielsen SoundScan listed Swift as the most commercially successful country (or country/pop crossover) artist in music history with over 33 million digital tracks sold. As of March 2011, she has sold over 20 million albums and 33 million singles worldwide. (Unknown, Taylor Swift)

Game Party

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Game Party. Nintendo Wii. Midway Home Entertainment, Inc. Licensed by Nintendo
2007. Everyone 10+. ASIN B000SFK0SO

SUMMARY

Game Party features seven games: darts, table hockey, shuffle board, hoop shoot, skill ball, ping cup and trivia. Up to four people may play. Players have 175 characters to choose from. Every game awards tickets that you can use to unlock different playing equipment like different colored mallets or darts. Prior to each game instruction is provided about how to use the Wii remote for that particular game. High scores are tracked and displayed.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Game Party is a favorite in my house. Mainly because the games are fairly simple to play. The Wii remote can be fairly sensitive, especially when playing darts. The slightest movement can make your dart miss the board. Although it may be slight player error, I prefer the sensitive remote explanation. There are four games available in darts, we found that cricket is the preferred game when playing in a group. The trivia questions are not as easy as you think they would be. There are several that focus on the eighties, the eighties may be a mystery to teens. Ping cup is not easy. I would have to say the same for the real life version of the game, except in college we called it beer pong. Table hockey (air hockey) is a lot of fun. I found that it was a little more difficult to get the hang of using the remote. But after a few games it was easy enough. Shuffle board, hoop shoot, skill ball all are quite easy to learn and are also a lot of fun. This is rated Everyone 10+, however, this is really a video game consisting of bar games. It is also a great game for teen game tournaments at the library.

GAMER’S ANNOTATION

If you love playing games like darts, air hockey and skeet ball, this video game is for you.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE WII

The Wii is a home video game console released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006. As a seventh-generation console, the Wii primarily competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of the two others. As of May 2011, the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales,]and in December 2009 broke the record for best-selling console in a single month in the United States.

A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.

The Wii is Nintendo's fifth home console and the direct successor of the Nintendo GameCube, being fully backwardly compatible with all GameCube games and most accessories. Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets. (Unknown, Wii)

Scene It?

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Scene it?. Mattel Games. Board Game. 13 – Adult. ASIN: B000EEYCII

SUMMARY

The object is to be the first player or team to enter the winners circle. Scene it? can be played with 2-4 players or teams. Players roll 2 dice and move the number of spaces shown on the numbered die. The second die is for categories. Depending on the symbol rolled, players will have to complete different DVD or Trivia Card challenges. The DVD challenges are My Play (only the player that rolled the dice may attempt to answer the on screen challenge) and All Play (all players may attempt to answer the on screen challenge). The trivia card challenges are Take Three Challenge (player must identify an actor, actress or movie from three clues), Songs and Slogans (player must answer a question associated with a song, slogan or tagline), and Pop Culture (player must answer a question related to movie pop culture). Buzz Cards can either help or hurt the player or their opponent and Players Choice allows the player to choose from any of the previously mentioned categories. To win the game players must stop on the space labeled Stop: All Play To Win. From there the player has two ways to win- the first is All Play to Win; if that proves unsuccessful the second option is Final Cut.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

We actually played this on Thanksgiving. Although there were no teens present, this is a game that they would enjoy as long as they know quite a bit about older movies. The version that we played was the original game. There are different types of questions for My Play and All Play. The My Play questions are trivia questions about the movie others are about the specific clip. The All Play questions were along the lines of be the first to identify an actor or movie. Some of the movies that were included in the game were The Big Lebowski, Legally Blond, Back to the Future, Young Frankenstein and Fargo. I think that this would be a difficult game for teens because the movies are older. However, if you have a teen movie buff on your hands, Scene it? is perfect. For the younger tweens and those that are into more current movies I would purchase one of the special editions of Scene it? like Harry Potter or Twilight. It would also be a great addition to game night at the library.

PLAYER’S ANNOTATION

If you love movies and movie trivia, this game is for you!

INFORMATION ABOUT MATTEL

Mattel, Inc. is the world's largest toy company based on revenue. The products it produces include Fisher Price, Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, Masters of the Universe, American Girl dolls, board games, and, in the early 1980s, video game consoles. The company's name is derived from Harold "Matt" Matson and Elliot Handler, who founded the company in 1945. Handler's wife, Ruth Handler, later became president, and is credited with establishing the Barbie product line for the company in 1959. After the release of the Barbie doll, Mattel revolutionized the toy industry with its talking dolls and toys. Major successes in the 1960s with the talking Chatty Cathy doll in 1960 and See 'N Say toys in 1965 moved Mattel to its position as the number one toymaker in America. Mattel closed its last American factory, originally part of the Fisher-Price division, in 2002, outsourcing production to China, the beginning of a chain of events that led to a scandal involving lead contamination. On Friday, September 3, 2010 a mini "Flash Crash" appears to have occurred in Mattel shares which plunged 22% in pre-market trade for no apparent reason, only to recover shortly thereafter.
