The Beginning

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

The Beginning. The Black Eyed Peas. Audio CD. Interscope Records. Release Date: November 30, 2010. ASIN B0042X90LG

SUMMARY

The beginning is The Black Eyed Peas sixth album. It follows the success of their previous album The E.N.D. It is a hip hop album that has incorporated songs from the past. The song "The Time (Dirty Bit)" opens with the opening lyric of I’ve Had the Time of My Life from the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. There are other older songs that are in the background of the additional songs on the CD, but I do not know the names of those songs. I recognize them though. The tracks on the album are: The Time (Dirty Bit), Light Up the Night, Love You Long Time, Xoxoxo, Someday, Whenever, Fashion Beats, Don’t Stop the Party, Do It Like This, The Best One Yet (The boy), Just Can’t Get Enough, Play It Loud.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

I am most certainly not a music critic, either I like it or I don’t. I like The Beginning. It’s a great CD that will keep you upbeat. I loved The Time. I am a child of the 80’s, so this was a nice surprise. I also think that it was great that we get to hear Fergie’s voice. In most of the CD her voice is digitized. She really has a great voice, it’s a shame we don’t get to hear it. Love You Long Time has a Reggae kind of feel to it, mixed with hip hop of course. Play it loud is the closest song to pop on the album. It is one of the milder songs. No ballads here. This CD will keep you going on a rough day. It is not the kind of music you want to relax to. If you’re looking to pick up the pace then The Beginning is for you. Teens will love this CD. The Black Eyed Peas are hugely successful. I think that teens and young adults play a large part in that success.

LISTENER’S ANNOTATION

Great hip hop CD for when you need a pick me up.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE BLACK EYED PEAS:

The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1995. The group is composed of rapper and multi-instrumentalist will.i.am, rappers apl.de.ap and Taboo, and singer-rapper Fergie. Since the release of their third album, Elephunk, in 2003, the group has sold an estimated 27 million albums worldwide, 20 million singles and 47 million copies with both sales combined.

The group scored their first worldwide hit with "Where Is the Love?" in 2003, which topped over ten charts worldwide. Another single was the European hit "Shut Up". Their next album, Monkey Business was also a worldwide hit, certified 4× Platinum in the U.S., and spawning two hit singles, "My Humps" and "Don't Phunk with My Heart".
In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have ever simultaneously held the #1 and #2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, with their singles "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling". The album later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with "Imma Be", making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album before being followed with "Rock That Body" which managed to peak in the Top 10 of Hot 100. "I Gotta Feeling" has become the first single to sell more than 1 million downloads in the United Kingdom.

Before becoming part of the Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am and apl.de.ap were in a group called Atban Klann, signed to Eazy E's Ruthless Records. The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on the Billboard's Decade-End Chart Artist of the Decade, and 7th in the Hot 100 Artists of the Decade. The group has been nominated for "Most Popular International Artist" in the ARIA Music Awards.

In November 2010, they released their album The Beginning. The first single of the album was "The Time (Dirty Bit)". The song topped the charts in many countries. In February 2011, the group performed at the Super Bowl XLV halftime show. The album's second single was "Just Can't Get Enough" and it was released in February 2011. (Unknown, The Black Eyed Peas)

Twilight Soundtrack

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Twilight: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Various Artists. Audio CD. Chop Shop/Atlantic. Release Date: November 4, 2008. ASIN B001ED7C58

SUMMARY

This is the soundtrack for the movie Twilight. I purchased the soundtrack from iTunes and there are three bonus tracks. It offers a wide variety of music ranging from dance to rock to classical. It features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paramore (a teen favorite) and Rob Pattinson (the actor that played Edward in the movie).

Supermassive Black Hole: Muse
Decode: Paramore
Full Moon: The Black Ghosts
Leave Out All the Rest: Linkin Park
Spotlight (Twilight Mix): MuteMath
Go All the Way (Into the Twilight): Perry Farrell
Tremble for My Beloved: Collective Soul
I Caught Myself: Paramore
Eyes on Fire: Blue Foundation
Never Think: Rob Pattinson
Flightless Bird, American Mouth: Iron & Wine
Bella’s Lullaby: Cater Burwell
Let Me Sign (Bonus Track): Rob Pattinson
La Traviata (Bonus Track): Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Clair de Lune (Bonus Track): The APM Orchestra

CRITICAL EVALUATION

I had purchased the soundtrack after I saw the movie. I absolutely love the song Supermassive Black Hole by Muse. It is full of energy and is a great pick-me-up for a road trip. It leans towards new wave, but it works. The other song that I just had to own was Bella’s Lullaby. What a beautiful piece of music. I actually wound up buying the score because of it. Once I listened to the two songs that I loved from the movie I found that the rest of the soundtrack was quite good. Go All the Way (Into the Twilight) is a dance song, with a hint of techno. Never Think by Rob Pattinson is very different than most of the music on the soundtrack. Where most of the songs are fast paced, this song is a quiet acoustic song that almost seems out of place on the soundtrack. However, once you see where it is placed in the movie, it makes sense. If teens are looking of a good mix of music, the Twilight Soundtrack delivers.

LISTENER’S ANNOTATION

When you listen to the soundtrack you can visualize the movie.

Fearless

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Fearless. Swift, Taylor. Audio CD. Big Machine Records. Release Date: November 11, 2008
ASIN B001EYGOEM

SUMMARY

Fearless is Taylor Swift’s second release. She has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards for Fearless. It was the first album to sell one million copies in 2009. Song title are: Fearless, Fifteen, Love Story, Hey Stephen, White Horse, You Belong With Me, Breathe, Tell Me Why, You’re Not Sorry, The Way I Loved You, Forever & Always, The Best Day, Change.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Before I bought this CD, I had no idea that Taylor Swift was a country music singer. I thought that she was a pop singer. Although her style is most definitely country, she has enough pop influence for her to be able to cross over into the pop market. Swift did write some of the songs on the CD, and she can sing, unlike the Britney’s of recent history. However, I thought all most of the songs sounded the same. Until I got to You Belong With Me, I felt like I was listening to one long song, some parts slower than others. Then beginning with the next song, I went back to one song again, with a short break for Forever & Always. I appreciate the fact that every artist has their own style, but a little variety is also good. I am not really a fan of country music, which may be why it all sounded the same to me. Since she’s been nominated for eight Grammy’s this year, there must be something more to Fearless that I just don’t get.

READER’S ANNOTATION

Country music with a pop twist.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST

Taylor Swift is an American country pop, singer-songwriter, musician and actress.
In 2006, she released her debut single "Tim McGraw", then her self-titled debut album, which was subsequently certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. In November 2008, Swift released her second album, Fearless, and the recording earned Swift four Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year, at the 52nd Grammy Awards. Fearless and Taylor Swift finished 2008 at number-three and number-six respectively, with sales of 2.1 and 1.5 million Fearless topped the Billboard 200 for 11 non-consecutive weeks; no album has spent more time at No. 1 since 2000. Swift was named Artist of the Year by Billboard Magazine in 2009. Swift released her third album Speak Now on October 25, 2010 which sold 1,047,000 copies in its first week.

In 2008, her albums sold a combined four million copies, making her the best-selling musician of the year in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Forbes ranked Swift 2009's 69th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $18 million and 2010's 12th-most powerful celebrity with earnings of $45 million. Swift was ranked the 38th Best Artist of the 2000–10 decade by Billboard. In January 2010 Nielsen SoundScan listed Swift as the most commercially successful country (or country/pop crossover) artist in music history with over 33 million digital tracks sold. As of March 2011, she has sold over 20 million albums and 33 million singles worldwide. (Unknown, Taylor Swift)

Game Party

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Game Party. Nintendo Wii. Midway Home Entertainment, Inc. Licensed by Nintendo
2007. Everyone 10+. ASIN B000SFK0SO

SUMMARY

Game Party features seven games: darts, table hockey, shuffle board, hoop shoot, skill ball, ping cup and trivia. Up to four people may play. Players have 175 characters to choose from. Every game awards tickets that you can use to unlock different playing equipment like different colored mallets or darts. Prior to each game instruction is provided about how to use the Wii remote for that particular game. High scores are tracked and displayed.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Game Party is a favorite in my house. Mainly because the games are fairly simple to play. The Wii remote can be fairly sensitive, especially when playing darts. The slightest movement can make your dart miss the board. Although it may be slight player error, I prefer the sensitive remote explanation. There are four games available in darts, we found that cricket is the preferred game when playing in a group. The trivia questions are not as easy as you think they would be. There are several that focus on the eighties, the eighties may be a mystery to teens. Ping cup is not easy. I would have to say the same for the real life version of the game, except in college we called it beer pong. Table hockey (air hockey) is a lot of fun. I found that it was a little more difficult to get the hang of using the remote. But after a few games it was easy enough. Shuffle board, hoop shoot, skill ball all are quite easy to learn and are also a lot of fun. This is rated Everyone 10+, however, this is really a video game consisting of bar games. It is also a great game for teen game tournaments at the library.

GAMER’S ANNOTATION

If you love playing games like darts, air hockey and skeet ball, this video game is for you.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE WII

The Wii is a home video game console released by Nintendo on November 19, 2006. As a seventh-generation console, the Wii primarily competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo states that its console targets a broader demographic than that of the two others. As of May 2011, the Wii leads the generation over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales,]and in December 2009 broke the record for best-selling console in a single month in the United States.

A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Another distinctive feature of the console is WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive messages and updates over the Internet while in standby mode.

The Wii is Nintendo's fifth home console and the direct successor of the Nintendo GameCube, being fully backwardly compatible with all GameCube games and most accessories. Nintendo first spoke of the console at the 2004 E3 press conference and later unveiled the system at the 2005 E3. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata revealed a prototype of the controller at the September 2005 Tokyo Game Show. At E3 2006, the console won the first of several awards. By December 8, 2006, it had completed its launch in four key markets. (Unknown, Wii)

Scene It?

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Scene it?. Mattel Games. Board Game. 13 – Adult. ASIN: B000EEYCII

SUMMARY

The object is to be the first player or team to enter the winners circle. Scene it? can be played with 2-4 players or teams. Players roll 2 dice and move the number of spaces shown on the numbered die. The second die is for categories. Depending on the symbol rolled, players will have to complete different DVD or Trivia Card challenges. The DVD challenges are My Play (only the player that rolled the dice may attempt to answer the on screen challenge) and All Play (all players may attempt to answer the on screen challenge). The trivia card challenges are Take Three Challenge (player must identify an actor, actress or movie from three clues), Songs and Slogans (player must answer a question associated with a song, slogan or tagline), and Pop Culture (player must answer a question related to movie pop culture). Buzz Cards can either help or hurt the player or their opponent and Players Choice allows the player to choose from any of the previously mentioned categories. To win the game players must stop on the space labeled Stop: All Play To Win. From there the player has two ways to win- the first is All Play to Win; if that proves unsuccessful the second option is Final Cut.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

We actually played this on Thanksgiving. Although there were no teens present, this is a game that they would enjoy as long as they know quite a bit about older movies. The version that we played was the original game. There are different types of questions for My Play and All Play. The My Play questions are trivia questions about the movie others are about the specific clip. The All Play questions were along the lines of be the first to identify an actor or movie. Some of the movies that were included in the game were The Big Lebowski, Legally Blond, Back to the Future, Young Frankenstein and Fargo. I think that this would be a difficult game for teens because the movies are older. However, if you have a teen movie buff on your hands, Scene it? is perfect. For the younger tweens and those that are into more current movies I would purchase one of the special editions of Scene it? like Harry Potter or Twilight. It would also be a great addition to game night at the library.

PLAYER’S ANNOTATION

If you love movies and movie trivia, this game is for you!

INFORMATION ABOUT MATTEL

Mattel, Inc. is the world's largest toy company based on revenue. The products it produces include Fisher Price, Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, Masters of the Universe, American Girl dolls, board games, and, in the early 1980s, video game consoles. The company's name is derived from Harold "Matt" Matson and Elliot Handler, who founded the company in 1945. Handler's wife, Ruth Handler, later became president, and is credited with establishing the Barbie product line for the company in 1959. After the release of the Barbie doll, Mattel revolutionized the toy industry with its talking dolls and toys. Major successes in the 1960s with the talking Chatty Cathy doll in 1960 and See 'N Say toys in 1965 moved Mattel to its position as the number one toymaker in America. Mattel closed its last American factory, originally part of the Fisher-Price division, in 2002, outsourcing production to China, the beginning of a chain of events that led to a scandal involving lead contamination. On Friday, September 3, 2010 a mini "Flash Crash" appears to have occurred in Mattel shares which plunged 22% in pre-market trade for no apparent reason, only to recover shortly thereafter. Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock Bundle-includes guitar. Video Game. Wii Activision Publishing, Inc. 2007. T for Teen. ASIN: B000TGB4UU

SUMMARY

The bundle includes the game as well as a wireless Gibson Les Paul guitar controller. The game features classic rock songs. As the music plays there is a rolling neck of a guitar where there are colored dots that correspond with the fret buttons on the guitar that the player is using. You must hit the button at the same time are the strum bar in order to play the note. If you hit the wrong note or miss a note the guitar screeches. There are over 70 songs available to play, including Hit Me With Your Best Shot, School’s Out For Summer and Barracuda. Players can choose from three level easy, medium, hard and expert. You can either play alone, with another player, or battle a real life guitar hero like Slash. When players have completed their performance, they are provided with stats like the percentage of correct notes and note streaks.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock is loved by people of all ages. It is rated T for Teen. First I would like to say that neither myself nor my husband was successful at this game beyond the easy level. We tried but we got booed off stage pretty quickly. This game is much harder than it looks, or at least we thought so. However, even though we weren’t very good, we had a blast. One really great thing about this game is the music. They picked songs I loved growing up and through college. These are also rock songs that many older teens are familiar with. With all of the dance, pop, and rap that kids are listening to, I’m so glad there is a game that has some good old fashioned rock. It really is a game for the whole family, mom and dad can rock out with the kids. Or at least the kids can laugh at mom and dad while they try to rock out. It is also a great game for teen game tournaments at the library. My local library has some great photos of teens playing this on game night.

GAMER’S ANNOTATION

If you ever wanted to be a rock star, this game is for you!

Peterson's

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

www.petersons.com
Peterson's - Your Comprehensive Guide to College Information
Accesed through the William K. Sanford Library's teen page.

SUMMARY

Peterson’s is a website that provides links to colleges and universities. In addition to colleges and graduate programs users can also find information about distance learning, culinary arts, nursing schools, career colleges, international schools, visual and performing arts schools, MBA programs and law programs. Users can search for colleges by state major, selectivity, sports, religion, etc. There is also information on the different types of schools, how to choose the right college, test scores, admission and scholarships. There are easy to use drop down menus as well an numerous highlighted articles.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Peterson’s is a website that is valuable for anyone looking for information on education post high school. Teens looking to go to college or any other type of school will find the information here. All of the questions about choosing the right school are answered. The amount of information provided is substantial and helpful. However the searches lack organization. When searching for a college by state the user receives a list of colleges with links to the college, but in no particular order. In New york there are 273 colleges according to the search. That may be overwhelming for a student. When searching for a college by major the user gets an alphabetized list of majors. Once clicking on a major the user receives a list of schools that have that major. There are 847 schools that have an environment science program. The list is not even arranged by state. The search feature is a major selling point for a college website. Based on that fact alone, I would look for another website to search for colleges and programs. However, if the user is looking for general college information, then I would recommend Peterson’s.

READER’S ANNOTATION

Peterson’s is the website to visit if you are looking for general information about going to college.

The Town of Colonie Youth Employment Services
Accessed through the William K. Sanford Library’s Teen Webpage

SUMMARY

The Town of Colonie Youth Employment Services website provides job listings for teens 16 and over. Open jobs are listed by category: retail sales/cashiering, maintenance and stock, clerical work, lifeguards/day care providers/camp counselor/human service workers, miscellaneous, restaurants, full time jobs, and staffing agencies. At the end of the list of jobs there is a training announcement for the Culinary Tech Center Training Program. Underneath that there are links to other websites that have job resources.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

The Town of Colonie Youth Employment Service website is very basic, but services its purpose. It is basically a list of jobs by category. The positions are not in any type of order other than by category. And the user must scroll though list to get to the category they want. The positions note if they require that the teen be 16 and over or 18 and over. In New York you can get your working papers at age 16. If a teen is under 16 they will have to get a job ‘off the books’ where you get paid in cash. Many small businesses will pay you this way. I got my first job at 14 working ‘off the books’ as a counter person in a bakery on the weekends. NY of the jobs are in fast food restaurants or chain stores. This is a good resource for teens and it is self-explanatory. Scroll through the list of jobs until you see something you are interested in. Like I said, basic but gets the job done.

SUMMARY

Teens Know Best is a blog. Reader ages 12-18 discuss books in blog form. The Teens Know Best group meets once a month to discuss the book that they have read. Each member of the group posts to the blog about the books that they have read. Each post has a specific format:

Popularity:

There is also a question for the people that read the blog posting:
Reaction: no way! or huh? or right on!

The blog is separated by blogger, topic and date.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Teens Know best is a great way for teens to read peer reviews of books. Reading a review by an adult is ok, but a peer’s opinion is always more valuable. I really like the format of each individual blog. I really like the ‘convince us to read the book’ part. The teen is selling a book they enjoyed with another teen. Having the set format ensures that all of the important aspects of a book review are included. The best thing about this website is that the books reviewed are all new releases. The teens are reviewing the books before they even come out. As teens use the site they will become familiar with the teens that are blogging and will know which teens have similar likes to their own and use this as a reader’s advisory tool. The only down-side to the blog is also something I listed as a positive. The books are new. This leaves a big gap on the books that are reviewed on the blog. Overall this is a great website for teens that are looking for a new book to read. It provides a review by another teen that can help them choose the book that is right for them.

READER’S ANNOTATION

Transworld Skateboarding

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

Transworld Skateboarding June 2011. Transworld Media. ISSN7482008839

PLOT SUMMARY:

The cover promises 20 questions that will be answered by Nestor Judkins and the rebirth of night skating, featuring a guy skate boarding down a railing. Inside there are tons of ads, a question and answer column about skating issues ranging from ‘my friends and I broke into and abandoned building to skate, we got arrested and weren’t charged, but now were getting a skate park’ to which movie to you like better, cool skater clothes, the 10 best-selling boards of all time and features articles.

CRITICAL EVALUATION:

I picked this as a representation of magazines for teen guys. I am way out of my element here. I really did not get most of what I was reading. What I did see was an unbelievable amount of ads. While I understand that they are a necessity, this magazine has more than I’ve ever seen in a magazine. I think that this is something that teen guys that are into skateboarding would like. The articles are about people in the skateboarding world that I’m sure the reader knows. I had no idea who they were. I also did not see one female in the whole magazine. I don’t know if there are less females involved in the sport or not. It just seemed odd that the whole gender seemed to be excluded from the magazine. It’s a good pick for teens that are into skateboarding

READER’S ANNOTATION:

If you’re into skateboarding this magazine is for you.

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE:

SKATEboarding is a skateboarding magazine, website, and production company owned by Bonnier Corporation. Founded in 1983, TWS was a response to Thrasher Magazine and specifically to the December 1982 article ‘Skate and Destroy’ written by C.R. Stecyk III under the pen name ‘Lowboy’, and the February 1983 advertisement for Independent Trucks that featured a topless model with Independent decals on her breasts.

Transworld began publishing under the ownership of Larry Balma, owner of Tracker Trucks, and Peggy Cozens. Initially, the publishing and editorial team were known as the ‘United Skate Front’. Balma later spoke of the magazine’s beginnings as a reaction to Thrasher, saying ‘They were pretty harsh, sex and drugs and using four-letter words and all that and in the early '80s, the sport started growing and (Thrasher) wasn't the best magazine for young kids'.

The first issue of TWS contained the article ‘Skate and Create’ and its author Peggy Cozens noted ‘I have become increasingly concerned about a new skate attitude being pushed on skaters: Skate and Destroy’ The article went on to highlight the positive and creative side of skating. The stance of the magazine remained positive to the extent that Thrasher owner Fausto Vitello wrote ‘They were about Skate and Create; we were about Skate and Destroy.’
The magazine was sold to Times Mirror in 1997 and in 2000 became a part of AOL Time Warner. In late 2001 the magazine was famously packaged with an AOL software disc which prompted the editorial note the following month that stated ‘Sorry for the poly-bagged edition with the 1,000 hours of free Internet access from AOL. We here at the magazine didn't even find out about the atrocity until (the magazines) made it into the office. We feel just as violated as you’. Internal tensions between the magazine staff and owners AOL Time Warner prompted a walkout of several key editorial members.

On September 12, 2006, Time Inc. announced the sale of Time4 Media, comprising eighteen print magazines, including the TRANSWORLD group of titles. The eighteen Time4 properties were eventually sold on January 25, 2007 to the Bonnier Corporation—a 200-year-old Sweden-based media and entertainment company. (Unknown, Transworld Skateboarding)

Seventeen Fitness

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

Seventeen Fitness Summer 2011, Celeb Special. Hearst Communications Inc. ISSN 7336108177

PLOT SUMMARY:

As the title suggests, this ia an edition of Seventeen magazine about fitness. On the cover is a girl in a bikini with the caption: Get your best bikini body now. Reading though the magazine brings helpful hints on choosing the best bikini for your body, workouts, and eating tips. Also included is a free poster of Zac Efron and Justin Bieber.

CRITICAL EVALUATION:

I think this is a great magazine for teen girls. The workouts provided are sensible and the diet tips offered are practical. With tips like trade in your ice cream cone for a fruit bar or have a caramel apple instead of a funnel cake. They are simple healthy choices that teens can make that will easily fit into their lifestyle. The workouts focus on cardio, strength training and yoga. But the best thing is that there are before and after pictures of celebrities that have changed their bodies. However, not all of them have lost weight. Hillary Duff and Shenae Grimes gained weight. They thought they were too thin. What a great message to send to teen girls that are self-conscious about their appearance. You can be too thin, and it doesn’t look good. This is a great pick for teens that are looking to get healthier for the summer.

READER’S ANNOTATION:

Great workouts, diet tips and everything you’ll need for the beach this summer.

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE:

Seventeen is an American magazine for teenagers. It was first published in September 1944 by Walter Annenberg's Triangle Publications. News Corporation bought Triangle in 1988, and sold Seventeen to K-III Communications (later Primedia) in 1991. Primedia sold the magazine to Hearst in 2003. Cosmopolitan

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION:

Cosmopolitan. June 2011. Interactive Media. ISSN 7482008233

PLOT SUMMARY:

Cosmopolitan is a magazine that covers everything girly: sex, beauty, fashion and guys. The cover features Cameron Diaz and promises articles like: 78 Ways to Turn Him On, What Men Want Most After 9pm, Sexy Summer Hair, you get the gist. You have to get through thirteen pages of ads before the reader gets to the table of contents. After that there are more articles about what’s sexy right now, an interview with Cameron Diaz, the gotta-have-it shorts, things about guys they wish we know. Oh and did I mention the ads. I think over half of the magazine is ads.

CRITICAL EVALUATION:

I read Cosmo as an older teen. I don’t read magazines anymore. I forget how many ads there are. I really felt like I was looking though a book of ads. I was also disappointed to see all of the articles on how to please a guy and what guys want, and only one or two on women’s confidence. I think most teen girls are drawn to Cosmo at one time or another. It seems to be almost part of the rite of passage for teens. However, I remember when I stopped reading the magazine. I noticed that after a while all of the article were pretty much the same. Stating the same thing over and over, just in different ways. Twenty years later, it’s still the same Cosmo.

READER’S ANNOTATION:

If you want the latest info on guys, fashion and makeup, it’s in Cosmo.

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE:

Sci Fi is a magazine for people of all ages that love Sci Fi. It covers anything Sci Fi. Even though it is the official magazine of the Sci Fi Channel, they cover so much more. I originally chose Sci Fi because I saw Johnny Depp, X-Men and Scream 4 featured on the cover. These are all movies that teens will enjoy. This magazine is not aimed at teens, but it is written in language that should be easily understood by most. The magazine strikes a good balance between what is offered on their channel and what is mainstream. Teens will enjoy this magazine because movies and shows that are aimed at teens will be covered. 10 Things I hate About You is loosely based on the William Shakespeare play Taming of the Shrew. Once again it is a teen movie that focuses on what other people think about you. Kat is a feminist and hates everything about high school and high school boys. She is tough and bitchy. What people don’t know is that she does have insecurities and she is not as much of bitch as people think she is. She has her reasons for shunning the popular high school crowd. Patrick is the same. People are afraid of him because there are rumors that he spent time in jail, of course not true. He is seen as a bad boy, and Patrick has no problem with this. Joey Donner on the other hand, is just as shallow as he appears to be. Always concerned about his image. Once again, this is a great teen coming of age story. Each one of the characters learns the importance of honesty and what it means to be yourself.

READER’S ANNOTATION:

What do you do when your sister is a shrew and the only way you can go to the prom is is=f she goes too? You pay someone to date her.

CRITICAL EVALUATION:

Clueless is a great romantic teen comedy loosely based on Jane Austin’s Emma. It reflects teens in a funny yet true way. Many people see teens as just teens, not taking the chance to get to know them better. Cher is kind-hearted and truly means well. She lives in the perfect world. But like life, things do not go as planned for the first time in her life. Cher decides to really take a look at herself and realizes that she was insisting that what other people wanted was the same thing that she wanted. This is a great way to show a classic coming of age story. Teens will be able to laugh at the teen milestones like driving and sex. Teens will be able to relate to this movie as well as find it entertaining.

Transformers

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Transformers. Bay, Michael; director. DVD. Dreamworks Video. Release Date: October 16, 2007. PG-13. ASIN B000VR0570

PLOT SUMMARY

Sam Witwicky's not the coolest guy, but he tries, maybe a little too hard. His Dad buys him an old beat up yellow Camaro. It turns out his beat up car is named Bumblebee, a robot alien called an Autobot. Bumblebee was sent to be Sam’s guardian from the Decepticons. The Decepticons have come to Earth to find the Allspark and destroy the human race. The Autobots are trying to stop them. Sam has the map to locate the Allspark and he doesn’t know it. The map is on his great-grandfathers glasses that he is trying to sell on eBay. Sam is joined by his crush Mikaela. Together with the Autobots they will try and save the human race.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

I remember my brother watching the Transformers cartoon when we were younger, so I really wasn’t expecting anything great from this movie. I was completely wrong. Transformers is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. It has everything; action, humor, humans, robots, and idiots. The special/digital effects are unbelievable. The transformations of the Autobots and the Decepticons are incredible. I was expecting an action movie, and there was most certainly plenty of action. However, I was not expecting the movie to make me laugh. My favorite scene is when Sam offers Mikaela a ride home. Bumblebee (before we find out his alien status) plays all types of inappropriate, yet appropriate, songs on the radio for the two teens, trying to help Sam out. The plot is intriguing and keeps you hooked from the moment the movie starts. This movie has something for everyone. I can’t wait to see the sequel!

VIEWER’S ANNOTATION

Sam bought a car that turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

After launching his career as an award-winning commercial and music video director, Michael Bay quickly emerged as one of Hollywood's boldest and most bankable feature film directors. Characterized by his aggressive visual style and high-octane action sequences that have become the L.A. native's cinematic signature, the films that Bay has directed and produced have hit $3 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

Now established as one of the industry's elite action filmmakers, Bay has been dazzling audiences since the premiere of his first feature film, Bad Boys, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, in 1995. The $9 million film won Best Action Sequence at the MTV Movie Awards, and it grossed over $140 million worldwide, making it Columbia Pictures' top-grossing film of that year. Bay's impressive sophomore effort, The Rock, starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, followed a year later. Shot on location on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, The Rock surpassed Bay's blockbuster debut, taking in more than $335 million worldwide. Bay continued his hot streak in 2001, directing the epic Pearl Harbor and sharing producer credit on the film with Bruckheimer.

Bay turned the 80’s cartoon Transformers into an exciting live-action blockbuster that grossed over $700 million worldwide, making it Bay's most successful film to date, and established it as Dreamworks' biggest film franchise. He is currently at work developing the third chapter to Transformers, slated for a summer 2011 release.

Bay's production company, Bay Films, remains one of the most cutting-edge production entities in Hollywood today and continues to grow. Five years ago, Bay joined forces with producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form to create Platinum Dunes, a company whose mission is to make films with budgets under $20 million that would give talented commercial and video directors the chance to break into the feature world. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Lucas, George; writer and director. DVD. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Release Date: September 12, 2006. PG. ASIN B000FQJAIW

PLOT SUMMARY
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

Young Luke Skywalker is living on Tatooine with his aunt and uncle. His uncle purchases two droids. One, R2-D2 has a secret message for Obi-Wan Kenobi from Princess Leia. Leia has stolen the plans for the Death Star and has been captured by Darth Vader. She asks Obi-Wan for help. Luke and Obi-Wan join forces to help Leia. The force is an ancient religion and Obi-Wan begins teaching Luke the ways of the force. They hire Han Solo and his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca to help them rescue Leia and the plans. Luke joins the rebellion to help them try to destroy the Death Star.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Star Wars is a classic. My aunt took me to see it in the movie theater when it was released in 1977. I was a bit young, but I grew up to be a huge Star Wars fan. Star Wars is a classic hero story, just with light sabers and aliens. Luke is the underdog; he’s the kid that has to make everything right. He must save the princess and slay the dragon, or in this case destroy the Death Star. Compared to the new Star Wars movies the special effects leave something to be desired, but for 1977, they were pretty good. The banter and chemistry between Han Solo and Leia is evident even before we know what happens in the second movie. And Han Solo’s “I have a bad feeling about this” carries on into every Star Wars movie and also to the Indiana Jones movies. When it comes to a great movies, it doesn’t get any better than Star Wars.

VIEWER'S ANNOTATION

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a simple farm-boy had to save the galaxy from the Death Star.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Lucas, George; writer and director. DVD
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Release Date: November 1, 2005
PG. ASIN B00005JLXH

PLOT SUMMARY

Chancellor Palpatine is kidnapped by General Grievous and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to rescue him. Upon their return, Padme tells Anakin that she is pregnant. Anakin is thrilled at the news, but Padme is worried about keeping their relationship a secret. Shortly after that, Anakin begins to have nightmares about Padme dying in childbirth. They are the same type of dreams that he had right before his mother died. Anakin becomes close with Chancellor Palpatine and the Jedi Council wants him to use that relationship to spy on the chancellor. The Jedi must find out who the Sith Lord is before it is too late and all is lost.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

Revenge of the Sith is the final movie to be released in the Star Wars saga; it is the third episode chronologically. This movie bridges the gap between the original three movies and the last three. All of the answers that Star Wars fans have been waiting for are in this movie. Anakin’s downfall is evident from the beginning. Star Wars fans know what is destined to happen. Anakin’s fear of losing Padme has consumed him, as Yoda says, "Fear is a path to the Dark Side.” Throughout the movie viewers watch Anakin’s slow and painful decent to the Dark Side. What we learn is that he did it out of love for Padme. There is also a difference in Obi-Wan. He has matured and seems closer the character that was played by Sir Alec Guinness. The last light saber battle of the movie between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader is extraordinary. The first appearance of Darth Vader as fans knew him from episodes IV through VI, makes the saga complete.

READER’S ANNOTATION

Follow Anakin Skywalker though his slow and final decent into the Dark Side.
